Absence From School:
When you are
absent from school it is important for your mom or dad to call the
school nurse at 292-2240, ext. 5152 to tell her why you are not in
school. They should try to call her before 9:30 in the morning.
Code of Conduct:
Getting Along with Others:
School is the most fun when students learn how to get along well with other students and teachers. At Hillcrest, we want everyone to understand how important it is to be responsible for their own behavior and actions. We expect every student to show good character and concern for other people at our school.
At Hillcrest, “GIVE ME FIVE” are the universal rules of the school. This means that no matter where a student is - inside the school, in the lunchroom, on the bus, or on the playground, students are expected to follow these five rules. Students will see “GIVE ME FIVE” posted around the school in case they need a reminder of what is expected of them.
Hillcrest - GIVE ME FIVE
- LISTEN to trusted adults.
- TREAT others fairly.
- KEEP hands, feet and objects to yourself.
- BEHAVE in a safe and responsible way.
- RESPECT others and their property.
If students do not follow the rules, there are consequences.
First time - The teacher will give the student a warning.
Second time - The teacher will contact the student’s parents and send a report to the Principal.
Third Time - Student will be sent to talk with the Principal. The Principal will contact the parents.
*NOTE: Any physical fighting will mean an automatic suspension from school.
Working Through Conflicts
All of the adults at Hillcrest will help students solve conflicts that they may have with other students and sometimes even with teachers. Some of the supports we will offer are:
- Teachers will read books with their class that will help facilitate discussion about behavior related topics and highlight the process to use to solve problems.
- Each class will have at least one class meeting a month. The meetings will help students understand the way to treat classmates, work out problems using strategies like “Walking the Peace Path,” and who students can go to for assistance when they need it.
- Each classroom will have a peace path or table that will help guide students through the process of conflict resolution.
- After school conflict resolution, classes with the principal will be scheduled for students who are in need of extra support.
Fire Drills:
Fire
drills are a very serious and important practice in case there
is ever a real fire or emergency. When you hear the fire
drill siren you are to line up quickly and quietly. There
is to be no talking at all. The teacher will lead you out
of the building where you will wait on a quiet line. When
you hear the fire siren a second time the teacher will bring you
back into the building. You should be just as quiet when
you return to the building.
Homework:
It is
important for all first and second graders to do about 25
minutes of homework every school night. Kindergarten
students will only get homework on some school nights.
Library Books:
All
students will be given time to borrow a library book every time
you go to library class. You will also have time to return
library books the next time you go to library class. You
may also borrow and return library books every morning during
period one. Your teacher will tell you when to go to the
library, and she will give you a library pass that you must
carry with you in the hallways.
Lost and Found:
If you
ever lose something like a coat or backpack, you or your parent
are always welcome to look in the lost and found box in the
nurse’s office.
Breakfast and
Lunch:
In lieu
of morning snacks, all children may purchase breakfast at school
or bring a healthy item from home. Breakfast will be served
between 8:55 and 9:45 daily, depending on the classroom
schedule.
All
students may bring their own lunch or they may buy lunch in the
student cafeteria. Please do not bring glass bottles for lunch
(plastic bottles are much safer).
Nurse Visits:
If you do
not feel well tell your teacher and she will send you to the
nurse with a Nurse’s Pass. Bring the pass back to your
teacher when the nurse tells you it is time to return to class.
Parent
Pick-Ups:
·
Sometimes your parent might have to pick you up during the
school day to go to the doctor, dentist, or some other important
place. Please tell your mom and dad that they must send a
note to school on the morning that they would like to pick you
up during the school day. When your parents get to school,
they will report to the main office and we will call you to the
office to meet them.
·
If your parent wants to pick you up at the end of the day
instead of letting you take the bus, they should send a note to
school that morning. You should meet your parent in the
cafeteria when the office announces for pick-ups to be
dismissed.
Recycling:
Everyone
at Hillcrest School recycles paper, plastic bottles and cans.
All students should recycle papers in the classroom by placing
them in the trash can that is marked “PAPER”. All garbage
such as used tissues and things that are not paper should be
placed in the trash bag that has a black plastic bag in it.
Plastic bottles and cans should be placed on the sink counter in
your classroom. The custodian will collect them at the end
of the day.
Rules for the
Bus:
It is
very important for all students to be on your best behavior on
the school bus. If it is too noisy the driver might not
hear another car’s horn. If students are out of their
seats or fooling around, the driver will have a hard time
keeping his eyes on the road. Poor behavior on the bus can
be very dangerous because it can cause an accident to happen.
The drivers will always report the names of students who
misbehave on the bus to the principal. The principal will
call your parents and you will receive a consequence for your
misbehavior. If you are reported to the principal three
different times you will not be allowed to ride the bus for one
week.
*** Fist
fighting on the bus is an automatic suspension from the bus for
one week. ***
Tardy (Late) to
School:
If you
arrive late to school in the morning have your parent bring you
to the nurse’s office. The nurse will mark you late in her
book and give you a pass to class. Then go directly to
class and give the pass to your teacher.
Very Special
Programs for Students:
“Kindness Awards”
Being
kind to our schoolmates is extremely important. Teachers may
notice a student demonstrating kindness to someone, and she may
submit your name to the principal for special recognition.
Special recognition for kind behaviors will be rewarded with a
Hillcrest coin. Some examples of kind behaviors include: helping
someone pick up crayons, holding the door for others, etc.
“Publishers’ Teas”
If you
write and illustrate a book, our helper parents will put a cover
on it, and you and your parents will be invited to a Publishers’
Tea. After you read your book at the Tea you will receive
an award ribbon.
